Bible 101
Understanding and Applying the Bible

May 1st: “What’s the point of reading the Bible?”
(Psalm 119:1-16, 57-64, 105-112)
-
How often do you read the Bible?
-
Why do you read your Bible?
-
What are the different ways in which the Bible helps you in life and faith?
-
Read Psalm 119 - how does the poet view the Scriptures (the decrees, laws, precepts, and statutes of God)?
-
In what ways are you similar and/or different in your view of God’s Word?

May 8th: “What is God’s Word?”
(2 Timothy 3:16-17)
-
What does it mean when it says that “All Scripture is God-breathed”? (vs. 16)
-
What is the difference between “teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness”? (vs. 16)
-
What is righteousness? (vs. 16)
-
Do you consider yourself to be “thoroughly equipped”? Why / why not? How can you be better equipped?
-
If a non-believer asked you, “What is God’s Word?” how would you answer? (Consider Matthew 4:1-11; 5:17-20).
May 15th “How do we read God’s Word?”
(1 Timothy 2:1-7, 8-15)
-
Read and put into your own words 1 Tim. 2:1-7. What is the main meaning of the passage?
-
Now read and put into your own words 1 Tim 2:8-15. What is the main meaning of this passage?
-
Did you read and treat these two passages in the same way? Why / Why not?
-
What areas did you consider when you sought to understand the meaning of these passages?
-
When seeking to understand Scripture we need to be consistent in our approach… how consistent are you?

May 22nd: “How do you feed on God’s Word?”
(Romans 12:1-2)
-
What does it mean to “offer your bodies as living sacrifices”? (vs. 1)
-
How are we “transformed by the renewing of our minds”? (vs. 2)
-
What part does God’s Word take in this process?
-
When you come to read God’s Word, what is your prevailing attitude? Are you reading out of a sense of duty (“a good thing to do”); looking for guidance in life; academic study; a thought for the day; principles to live by; a window on God’s world; or some other thoughts?
-
Do you come to the reading of God’s Word with an expectation that God will speak directly to you? Why / why not?

oooooOOOOOooooo
Course reflection…
In order to grow spiritually mature you need to know and understand God’s Word…
-
How much of God’s Word could you explain?
-
How much could you recite from memory?
-
How important to you is God’s Word in your life?
-
How is this reflected in the time you spend seeking to understand God’s Word?
-
How has your commitment to reading and understanding God’s Word changed through these reflections?
